Interview Questions: Hidden Interests

Questions that might reveal a hidden interest by project or government officials in a supplier, contractor or subcontractor include:

  • Do you know or suspect, or have you heard, that any project or government official, or any relative of such official, has a hidden interest in a supplier, contractor or subcontractor?
  • Do you know, or suspect, or have you heard, that any official:
    • Owns an outside businesses or consulting practice?
    • Has family or other ties with any supplier, contractor or subcontractor?
    • Has discussed employment with any supplier, contractor or subcontractor?
  • Does any official appear to be living beyond his or her means?
  • Has any supplier, contractor or subcontractor received:
    • Unusually favorable treatment from any official?
    • An unusually large volume of business?
    • Unusually high prices?
  • Does any supplier provide an unusually wide variety of goods or services?
  • Has any official moved or consolidated a large amount of business from previous suppliers to a new supplier?
  • Does any official appear to be living beyond his or her means?
  • Have any officials failed to file the required conflict of interest and financial disclosure statements?
  • Are controls and procedures to prevent hidden interests in place and enforced?
